Under Section 20A of the Representation of People Act, 1950 and rules made there under, every citizen of India staying in a foreign country for employment, education or otherwise, (a) whose name is not included in the electoral roll; (b) who has not acquired the citizenship of any other country; and, (c) who has completed 18 years as on 1st January of the year, can make an application in Form 6A for being registered in the roll as ‘Overseas electors’ in the constituency pertaining to one’s place of residence in India as mentioned in the passport.
The application in Form 6A can be presented to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer in person or sent by post or can be filed online on the website of the Chief Electoral Officer of the concerned state or website of Election Commission of India (www.eci.nic.in). After getting enrolled in the electoral roll, one can cast vote in India after showing his/her valid Indian passport.
The decision of the ERO will be communicated to the applicant by post on his address in the foreign country given by him in form 6A and also by SMS on the mobile number given by him in form 6A. Electoral Rolls are also available on the website of the Chief Electoral Officer of the State concerned in PDF format and can be seen by anybody.
